Community Service is defined as unpaid service that is performed outside of the school day for the benefit of another individual or organization within the community. Students are required to complete and document 10 hours a year for a minimum of 40 hours to graduate. Students attending Birch Run High School less than 4 years may have their hour requirement modified.
In an effort to clarify acceptable community service opportunities, the administration at Birch Run High School has developed a list of approved community service activities.

The list of APPROVED COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES is as follows:

· Church or civic groups/organizations - Community Activities (Kiwanis, K of C, VFW, Habitat for Humanity, etc.)

· Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts – Community Activities

· Red Cross, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Leukemia Foundation and similar organizations events

· Museum, Zoo, Temple Theater, Library

· Hospital

· Senior Citizens Center/Home

· Tutoring (signed by school official at the site) – any other tutoring must be pre-approved by administration

· Soup kitchen, Food Pantry, Thrift shop, Panther Pack Cafe

· Volunteering at after school academic, athletic, or club activities (dance, concessions at games, camps, etc.)

· Assistance for a government unit (i.e. Birch Run or Taymouth Township Offices)

· Community Libraries

· Special Olympics (if outside of the school day)

Any others not listed here need to be pre-approved by a Birch Run High School Academic Interventionist (most typically unpaid baby-sitting, yard work, etc.)
Note: This type of community service is limited to 20 hours or less during a student's high school career.
